OxyContin is a powerful opiate painkiller that if abused can lead to addiction. In recent years OxyContin has been in the news because of its high potential for abuse; abusers will falsify prescriptions, doctor shop, or rob pharmacies to obtain the drug. Because OxyContin is a controlled substance and doctors are regulated by federal law, some addicts have turned to illegal drugs such as heroin because they are easier to obtain than OxyContin.
